Why do Indian women wear bindi?

 The tradition of wearing bindi by women dates back to 3rd century in India. The dot applied between the eyebrows is on the spot called 'Ajya Chakra'. Significance of applying at this spot is to conserve the subtle energy of the body and to keep us focused. A women who wears Sindoor or vermilion at the mid of her top forehead symbolizes that she is married.

Both men and women wear tilak between the eyebrows usually after a prayer. Sandal wood paste , turmeric or even vibhuti(sacred ash) are used as tilak. Temples offer tilak to their devotees too.
